The Salvation Army in Kalgoorlie-Boulder (WA) recently acquired a community bus to transport youth to activities they might usually find are inaccessible.

Corps Officer Captain Shirley Spooner described the bus as a “true blessing”.

“This new bus is … allowing us to reach out to youth who would normally be isolated by transport and unable to join us for different activities,” she said.

The Toyota Hiace Commuter bus was purchased through contributions from mining company Mineral Resources, Goldfields Toyota, the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and state representative Ali Kent MLA - Member for Kalgoorlie, as well as local council members Kyle McGinn MLC and Peter Foster MLC.

Among its other programs, the Kalgoorlie-Boulder Corps runs a youth drop-in space known as The Shed on Saturday afternoons and evenings where vulnerable or isolated youth can find mentoring, relaxing activities and a bite to eat.

Daniel Barker, Mineral Resource’s Manager for Communities and Stakeholder Engagement said the work The Salvation Army provided to the Kalgoorlie community was very important.

“We are proud to contribute to ensure that they are able to continue to offer their vital services,” he said.
