A church in the inner suburbs of Melbourne celebrated Self Denial Sunday with a special multicultural church service.

Attendees at Merri-Bek City Salvos wore cultural dress from Nigeria, India, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea, with prayer and singing held in various languages. The Bible reading was delivered in both English and Mandarin.

“Most importantly we took a special offering to assist countries in need and spent time wandering prayer stations as we considered the contrast between our lives and others around the globe,” the corps leaders stated on their Facebook page.

The Merri-bek region is very culturally diverse. According to a document released by Merri-bek City Council in 2022, 47.7 per cent of residents in the region had both parents born overseas.
