General sets The Salvation Army’s direction for the future
BY SIMONE WORTHING
General Lyndon Buckingham has launched a new international framework that will guide The Salvation Army’s mission and ministry into the future.
The new Global Strategic Framework is called Compass, which is captured in three words the General has coined: ‘People, Mission, Legacy’.
Compass was launched at Sunbury Court in London during the General’s Consultative Council, with many Army leaders around the world in attendance, including Australia’s Territorial Commander, Commissioner Miriam Gluyas.
“It [Compass] sets our direction, and we want everybody to be involved,” the General said.
“We all want to be a part of a growing Army. We all want to be a part of an enduring Army. And we’ve concentrated our efforts to try and find a strategy that will enable us at every level of the movement to advance the cause of our mission.
“We are determined to empower people, enhance mission impact and establish an enduring legacy,” he continued. “We need your help, we need your prayers, and we need your engagement. I pray that this framework will strengthen your ministry as we seek to love God and love others in Jesus’ name.”
Australian response
Commissioner Miriam Gluyas said she was excited to attend the launch and said the Compass framework aligned “beautifully” with the Australia Territory rallying cry of ‘Jesus-centred, Spirit-led, hope revealed’.
“As a global Salvation Army, we are determined to empower people, enhance mission impact and establish an enduring legacy,” she said.
“Compass, with the focus on people, mission and legacy, encapsulates many of the issues that we are currently working on in the Australia Territory.
“It’s a framework, not a strategy, and as we do further work, we will use parts of this on our spiritual strategy.
“For example, I have been asked to head up the Mission Integration component, with a great team. We will look at issues of belonging, membership, covenant, collaborative missional and spiritual spaces, growing healthy faith expressions and developing new ones. This includes the relationship between IHQ and THQ. We are already working intentionally on these issues and in our work groups.
“And, then, people and legacy!
“Our rallying cry stays – and fits beautifully. None of this will happen if we are not Jesus-centred and Spirit-led. There is do much hope to be revealed!”
The Global Strategic Framework
The document outlines The Salvation Army’s Global Strategic Framework, focusing on three main areas: Empowering People, Enhancing Mission Impact, and Establishing an Enduring Legacy.
It includes 12 priorities under these areas, such as spiritual life, leadership development, officer wellness, membership, covenant, resource allocation and global partnerships.
“Key to the framework is that, across the world, we focus on a growing Army and an enduring Army. These are key as we move into the future,” Miriam said.
